Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can be defined as skin which easily irritated, which reacts to heat, cold, and cosmetic products, for example, with the appearance of redness, prickling and burning sensations. Recently, Doppler color echography has enabled us to visualize even minimal changes in blood flow which take place in “sensitive” areas. Traces of histamine, the protein which is generated by human organism during allergic reactions have also been found in the irritated areas.

Cutaneous Sensitivity

Cutaneous sensitivity can be due to the state of health of the stratum corneum, the uppermost layer of the skin. This layer is a very organized tissue made up of lipids and proteins, and metabolically very active.

Normal, healthy skin is capable of ensuring its barrier, hydration and protection functions. If the natural protective barrier of the skin cannot fulfill its role, undesirable and potentially irritant molecules are no longer held back and can penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin. This alerts the proteins called “cytokines” which start chain reactions with the aim of protecting the skin from these aggressors. The stratum corneum is therefore essential as it plays a dominant role on the metabolism of the deeper layers of the skin.
